During the month of September, the MENA region has witnessed some political unrest and instability, most notably in Jordan, Egypt and Israel. In Jordan and Egypt, people have been taking to the streets and protesting against the countries’ worsening economic conditions. In Israel, the crime rate is increasing with as many as four murders happening in a single day. 

In this blog, we go over the major incidents that occurred in Jordan, Egypt and Israel during this month with the aim of providing an incident and security response recap. 

August 2019 Recap: Syria & Lebanon

During the month of August, the MENA region has witnessed some political unrest and instability; In Lebanon, Palestinian refugees have been holding protests in for over six weeks following the Lebanese Ministry of Labor’s crackdown on undocumented foreign labor. Lebanese waste problem deepens amidst establishment of landfills around residential areas. In Syria, battles between the Syrian Army along with its allies and the opposition forces intensified and led to the Syrian Army advance on opposition strongholds and took over control of a number of towns in Idlib and Hama.    

The Great March of Return: A Year in Numbers

On March 30th 2019, tens of thousands of Palestinian protesters engaged in a mass protest and gathered along the Israel-Gaza border to mark the one-year anniversary of the weekly weekend demonstrations. The Great March of Return protests started on March 30th last year calling for the Palestinians’ right of return to their lands, from which their families were violently expelled in 1948, and for the end of the 12-year Israeli blockade of Gaza.
