Settlement shooting triggers a wave of violence in the West Bank

Executive Summary

On Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018, seven Israeli settlers were wounded near the settlement of Ofra NE Ramallah in a drive-by shooting. A footage of the shooting showed a moving vehicle slowing down and targeting settlers on the junction near the entrance of the settlement. After shots were fired from the vehicle, Israeli soldiers fired back at the car, which then fled and continued north on Route 60. This incident triggered a massive manhunt in search of the gunmen in nearby villages and even in Ramallah.

Tensions in Syria intensify after failed ceasefire deal

On September 17, 2018, Russian and Turkish presidents agreed to create a demilitarized zone in Syria’s Idlib along the line of contact between the Syrian government forces and the armed opposition. The agreement fell apart following a chemical attack targeting Aleppo and reigniting clashes between Turkish-backed rebel forces in Idlib and the Syrian Army supported by Russian forces.

Hundreds Escape Libyan Prison amid Clashes between Armed Militias

On Sunday, Sept, 3rd, 2018, more than 400 inmates managed to break out from a jail near the Libyan capital Tripoli amid deadly violence between rival militia groups in the city.

According to the police, the prisoners were able to force the doors open and the guards, fearing for their lives, were not able to contain the breakout following the riots in jail. Clashes between the militias in the city have forced the UN-backed government to declare a state of emergency.

October 2016 major incidents

Tension that started in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in mid-September 2015, intensified in October and was portrayed by pervasive clashes with ISF, along with almost daily attacks on Israelis. As the graph indicates, in comparison with October 2016, Palestinian death toll was significantly higher in October 2015. 64 Palestinians were killed, while in 2016, 9 Palestinians were killed. The Israeli death toll in 2015 was also higher as 10 Israelis were killed as opposed to 3 in 2016.
